Function
/ˈfəŋ(k)-shən/
Function is an activity intended for a person or thing. The synonyms are task, responsibility, and duty. The opposite is inaction or nothing.
Word Background
Imagine you have a cool toy robot. It has lots of different parts that all work together to make the robot do amazing things, right? Each part has a special function, like a job it needs to do. The arms might help the robot grab things, the legs help it walk, and the lights might help it see.
Just like a robot’s parts, everything in the world has a function! A doorknob’s function is to help you open the door. A chair’s function is to give you a place to sit. The function of a toy car is to zoom around and have fun!
So, “function” is like a special job or purpose that something has.
Example Sentence
The function of the heart is to pump blood through the body.
